Placentophagy is the practice of consuming the placenta after birth. In modern postpartum care, this is most commonly done through placenta encapsulation, where the placenta is carefully prepared, dehydrated, powdered, and placed into capsules for postpartum use. Many families choose placenta encapsulation as part of their postpartum recovery experience for personal, cultural, or wellness-focused reasons.

While placenta use is discussed differently across cultures and modern medicine, many families view the placenta as a meaningful part of the pregnancy journey and choose to honor it through encapsulation, prints, keepsakes, or other postpartum rituals.

Current research on placenta encapsulation is limited and mixed. Some studies report subjective maternal benefits such as improved mood, energy, and satisfaction with postpartum recovery, while other reviews note insufficient evidence to confirm consistent clinical benefits.

Placenta encapsulation is a personal postpartum wellness choice and may not be appropriate in every situation. Research on placenta encapsulation remains limited, and organizations such as the CDC have noted concerns regarding potential contamination or infection risks if placenta preparation is not handled appropriately.
For this reason, Sweet Miracles follows careful handling and preparation practices. All our placentas are dried at 160 degrees Fahrenheit for no less than 24 hours but finish times vary based on size. All our reusable equipment is properly cleaned and disinfected following OSHA standards for disinfection and is designed to kill STIs and blood borne pathogens.
Sweet Miracles reserves the right to decline encapsulation services in certain situations involving infection concerns, contamination risks, substance exposure, or other medical considerations that may affect safety.
Clients are encouraged to discuss any postpartum recovery concerns or questions with their healthcare provider. Placenta encapsulation services are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
