Placenta Encapsulation

What is Placentophagy?

Placentophagy is the practice of consuming the placenta after birth. In modern postpartum care, this is most commonly done through placenta encapsulation, where the placenta is carefully prepared, dehydrated, powdered, and placed into capsules for postpartum use. Many families choose placenta encapsulation as part of their postpartum recovery experience for personal, cultural, or wellness-focused reasons.

Your Placenta Encapsulation Experience

Why Encapsulate Your Placenta?

Placenta encapsulation is a personalized postpartum service in which the placenta is carefully prepared, dehydrated, and placed into capsules for postpartum use. Many women choose placenta encapsulation as part of their postpartum recovery experience for personal, cultural, emotional, or wellness-focused reasons.

Throughout history, the placenta has held deep significance across many cultures and traditions surrounding birth and postpartum recovery. While placenta use is discussed differently across cultures and modern medicine, many families view the placenta as a meaningful part of the pregnancy journey and choose to honor it through encapsulation, prints, keepsakes, or other postpartum rituals.

Sweet Miracles offers several placenta service options designed to create a thoughtful and supportive postpartum experience, including placenta encapsulation, flavored capsules, placenta prints, cord keepsakes, and luxury recovery package upgrades.

If you are unsure what you would like to do with your placenta after birth, additional placenta options and educational resources can be found in the Helpful Documents section. Clients are always encouraged to perform their own research and choose the postpartum options that feel best for their individual needs and preferences.

Natural Components of the placenta

The placenta contains naturally occurring hormones, nutrients, proteins, and iron that supported pregnancy and fetal development.

Research has identified naturally occurring components such as:

  • Iron
    • Iron is important postpartum to support recovery after normal blood loss during birth and to help maintain healthy energy levels.
  • Protein
    • Protein plays an important role in tissue repair, healing, and overall postpartum recovery.
  • Oxytocin
    • Oxytocin is commonly known as the “bonding hormone” and is naturally involved in uterine involution after birth, emotional bonding, and breastfeeding.
  • Estrogen
    • Estrogen plays a role in many body systems and naturally decreases significantly following birth. These hormonal shifts are commonly associated with symptoms such as vaginal dryness, night sweats, hair shedding, and mood changes experienced after birth.
  • Progesterone
    • Progesterone is involved in supporting pregnancy and impacts mood-regulating neurotransmitters. Following birth, progesterone levels naturally decline significantly as the body transitions into the postpartum period.
  • Cortisol-related hormones
    • Cortisol-related hormones are associated with the body’s stress response and physical adaptation during major life and body changes. Sleep deprivation, physical recovery from birth, and hormonal shifts can all impact stress hormone regulation during the postpartum period.
  • Prolactin-related hormones
    • Prolactin is the primary hormone involved in milk production and works alongside oxytocin during breastfeeding and milk release.
  • Trace vitamins and minerals
    • The placenta also contains naturally occurring trace nutrients and minerals involved in overall postpartum recovery and normal body function.

Postpartum women often report perceived support with energy levels, emotional well-being, postpartum recovery, and milk supply while using placenta capsules. Individual experiences and results vary from person to person.

Educational Resources & Safety Information

What does research say?

Current research on placenta encapsulation is limited and mixed. Some studies report subjective maternal benefits such as improved mood, energy, and satisfaction with postpartum recovery, while other reviews note insufficient evidence to confirm consistent clinical benefits.

Many women who choose encapsulation describe their experience positively, but more large-scale scientific studies are still needed.

Safety & Considerations

Placenta encapsulation is a personal postpartum wellness choice and may not be appropriate in every situation. Research on placenta encapsulation remains limited, and organizations such as the CDC have noted concerns regarding potential contamination or infection risks if placenta preparation is not handled appropriately.

For this reason, Sweet Miracles follows careful handling and preparation practices. All our placentas are dried at 160 degrees Fahrenheit for no less than 24 hours but finish times vary based on size. All our reusable equipment is properly cleaned and disinfected following OSHA standards for disinfection and is designed to kill STIs and blood borne pathogens.

Sweet Miracles reserves the right to decline encapsulation services in certain situations involving infection concerns, contamination risks, substance exposure, or other medical considerations that may affect safety.

Clients are encouraged to discuss any postpartum recovery concerns or questions with their healthcare provider. Placenta encapsulation services are not intended to diagnose, treat, cure, or prevent any medical condition.
